Students of Leicester: your 30 second guide to the city’s independents

You’ve just taken the big leap to University and for some of you, landed yourself in an unfamiliar city. Fear not though, as Leicester is full of things to do and places to eat, drink and explore.

The city is also home to a cluster of independent businesses that you won’t find anywhere else, and we want to give you a quick lowdown on some of the places to discover.

Settling into your halls is no easy task but making your space feel a little more homely and comfortable will work wonders. Find those finishing touches at shops such as Harriman & Co where you can find candles, frames and soft furnishings.

Kit yourself out with all the essentials as well as quirky stationery and be the envy of the lecture hall with your brand new stylish notebook and sharpies. You’ll find all you need aplenty at shops including Gadsbys, Set and Just Fairtrade.

We know part of the University experience are those all-important night outs and socials and Leicester has you covered. For cheeky cocktail or two you can head to bars such as Firebug, Tonne, Spirits and Bottle Garden. For three floors of music catering to a wide range of alternative genres, Mosh is where you can let loose and bust a move.

If you’re wanting to escape the library for a day and take a well-earned study break, grab your friends and putt a few hole in ones at Caddyshackers crazy golf or bowl a few strikes at East Street Lanes. Catch the latest cinematic releases and independent films at Phoenix cinema and take in the arts with a show at Curve, Little Theatre and Haymarket Theatre.

And finally when your parents are here to visit and they’re treating you to dinner, you’re spoilt for choice with dining destinations aplenty here in the city. Feast on delicious curries at Chutney Ivy, sumptuous Italian food at San Carlo, tuck into a slice of pizza at Peter’s Pizzeria and enjoy pub grub at The Rutland & Derby.
